Archive of Historical Cases Reported to MARA

This page provides a historical archive of UFO cases reported to MARA for which a full investigation was not carried out either because the incidents took place before MARA was formed or because they came to our attention some number of years after they happened making an investigation difficult. All of the cases on this page are from incidents which took place prior to September 2004. We have another archive for cases since September 2004 at http://www.mara.org.uk/Archive.htm The purpose of this archive is to provide corroborative evidence for anyone who is looking for an event on a particular date which is why the archive is presented in chronological order with the most recent event at the top of the page.

Multicoloured Flashing Lights in the Sky in St. Helens, approximately 2002

This happened a few years ago now, at least 5 or 6. I was only around 10 years old. It was at a night, I think it must have been around 8-9 Pm. The area I was living in was 'St. Helens' (England).

I was round my best mates house, when we started to see blue and red flashes coming from outside, we took no notice and thought it was Police cars or Fire engines.

But as I was on my way home, I met up with my dad. And then I spotted that there was a few of our neighbours stood outside their home looking towards one direction. Then the red and blue lights started again. It looked like lightening coming from the clouds, but it was covering the cloud partly. I was scared of lightning at that time, and I thought it was lightning, so I tried to hurry home with my dad.

I've never thought of raising this matter, but the other day I was thinking about what it was. I think it was either a lightning phenomena, Northern lights, or something else. Could you please try and let me know what it may have been? Email me or something please.

Thanks, Andy.

MARA comment: It was not the Northern Lights as St. Helens is a little too far south to see them in any sort of brightness.  Even at the north pole, the northern lights would not be bright enough or fast changing enough to be misconstrued as any form of lightning.  Also the Northern Lights are pink and green see http://www.paddles.shetland.co.uk/Aurora%20images.htm for examples.  Lightning is always bluish white, although when viewed through clouds, the shade may change a little but it will never look like blue and red flashes.

Two Sightings in Runcorn, Cheshire, UK from New Years Eve 1996 and the Summer of 1997

Hi,

I would like to report two sightings one on new year’s eve of 96 and one about 6 – 12 months later

Well the first was whilst I was standing in my kitchen in De Lacy Row. I was getting a glass of water and I just happened to look out of the window when I saw a white  light shoot down from the sky towards the lake in Castlefields and turn rapidly straight back up, I shouted to my younger sister whom was behind me watching TV and told her what I had just seen! She told me to go to the lake and see if a plane had come down. I went to the lake and nothing was there.... This object stood out because as usual the sky was grey and this object was white! The movement was amazing I’ve never  seen anything like it before.

When the witness was asked if it could have possibly been a firework, he responded with the following:

In relation to the firework claim, a firework explodes! this came down at  very  rapid rate of decent then made a rapid accent out of my view. There is a video of Area 51 with some white lights dancing around the mountain range and this is very similar  to what I saw. Here is the link to the Youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow6LT6vMVkA

The Second sighting was in Castlefields canter bus stop.  I was with my older sister and she started pointing towards the sky and telling me there was a black object suspended between the clouds sitting motionless between the clouds. I couldn’t see it at first but after my sister pointed it out a few times there it was! It just sat there and we observed it for about 10 minutes it was sitting between two storm clouds high up and I would say it was about 5000-8000 ft away it was a pure black solid object.  I think this was about July August time of 97.  Now from my position I was standing at the left side of the bus stop in Castlefields centre so this would have been visible from the Mersey  it was about 5000-8000 ft away, so for my sister and me to notice it, it must have been some size!

I am now a Solider and I’ve been in plenty of helicopters to know this was no chopper, fighter aircraft , flair etc etc..

I would say the only aircraft we have that could possibly match the movement and non movement of what I saw in 97 and the time with my sister would be a drone aircraft !

Thanks for taking the time to read this email

Lights in the Sky Over Saughall Massie and Moreton, Wirral, UK, Approximately 1996

Hi my name is Danny.  I live in Moreton on the Wirral and I thought if I could pick your brains over an incident that took place about 12 years ago.

I am now 32 and the incident that took place has stayed in my mind since then.  Myself and some friends went camping in Saughall Massie and at around 2:00am in the morning, we saw strange lights in the sky flying around.  We all saw them, then around a month later we went to the same place again and the lights were there again and we saw lots of strange lights some blue and red low flying and I could almost hear a humming sound as they flew over us it was unbelievable.  I explained this to a friend and he said it could be we saw a meteor shower but I am not convinced...

I have thought about what it could be, maybe lights off car headlamps but I can't see how they would display in this way. We went again about 3 weeks later to the same place and again the lights were there.  This time I took a camera and have a picture of what we saw.  I haven't been back since but feel drawn to the place.

I am no stranger to seeing lights in the sky as I have seen the same type of lights 2 other times in the Moreton area, once with my mum and dad and a friend in my garden and the other time in a friends garden of which the lights we saw were on Granada Reports the following day as there were over 1000 phone calls made to the police regarding strange lights in the sky. This was around 1994 I think.

I believe the place were I saw the UFOs while camping is a hot spot for activity as we seen them there so many times, but it has been over 10 years since I saw them.  I am totally into this subject because of this incident and believe it should be looked into and a night watch should be done in the area which I would be happy to take part in.

E-mail me and let me know your comments on this incident.  I would be very grateful and I will give you my number to contact me if needed.

Thank you for your time.

Danny Lampkin

MARA Comment: We believe a meteor shower was most unlikely from the description given.  The repetitive nature of the lights over several evenings suggests something mundane was the cause, but we do not know what it was.

Flying Triangle UFO in Blackpool Lancashire UK on 19th November 1995: possible cause of power cut

Dear Bill,

I am just writing to tell you, of a sighting I had of a UFO (triangle shape) from my back garden on Sunday 19th November 1995.

I live on Bloomfield Road - Blackpool, and on this night in question, there was a power-cut at around 6.05pm. I went outside into my back garden to see what was going on, and noticed all in darkness. As I headed back to the house, I heard a (rustling) sound, and didn`t know where it was coming from, and at the same time saw a dull red light on the ground in front of me. I looked around and saw nothing, then, the sound died down and the light faded on the ground. Dumbfounded by this, I headed back to the middle of my back yard and looked up into the sky, and to my disbelief, I saw what I can only explain as an  equilateral-triangle shaped craft gliding slowly (est. 30mph) over the top of my house at around 5000 feet up.

The craft was jet black, with no lights or noise to be heard and silhouetted against the black sky, heading from NW (Fleetwood area) to SE (towards Preston.)

I saw the craft for around one minuet or so, until it disappeared into some thin wispy clouds.

The strange thing about the craft, was it looked like it was made out of glass with a brownish tint at the front.

I reported my sighting to the Blackpool South-Shore Police and was told they will be getting in touch with the appropriate authorities, to which I`ve heard nothing to this day.

I was wondering Bill, if you`ve had any reports of sightings of this craft on this particular day.

 Yours Sincerely,

Dear Bill,

Thank you for replying to my E-Mail I sent you recently, regarding my UFO sighting. I will be glad to answer your questions.

The power cut lasted about one and a half hours from 6:05pm to around 7:35-7:40pm. The extent of the power cut was in an area of about one square mile, although at the top of my road (Bloomfield Road) on Park Road, there was no power failure at all.

I would also like to add, that the craft I witnessed, was shaped slightly more like a wide isosceles triangle, because the back edge was slightly longer than the leading two edges, and rounded at each point.
